Heartworm

Heartworm is a serious, potentially fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes.  Mosquitoes pick up microscopic larvae from infected animals and transmit them to healthy pets.  Heartworms live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels of infected pets, can grow to over 12″ long, causing severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs.

Heartworm disease affects dogs, cats and ferrets, but  also live in other mammals, including wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions and—in rare instances—humans.  Dogs with infection may exhibit decreased appetite, weight loss, coughing  and listlessness.  Heartworm treatment can be difficult and expensive.

Heartworm disease is preventable with the use of monthly prescription medications.  These preventatives work by killing the heartworm larvae or immature larvae as they migrate through the tissues preventing their development into adult worms. It is important to administer preventives consistently and on time, as missing doses can leave the animal vulnerable to disease.

All dogs should be tested annually, even those on year-round prevention. Puppies should start prevention at 6-8 weeks but need a test at 6 months, another 6 months later, and then annually.
